The Amber Room is one of the greatest works of amber art. It was created in the 18th century in the Baroque Palace in Peterhof as a gift to the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm I. Its uniqueness lay in the fact that each panel of amber was masterfully carved and decorated, creating an impressive “golden room” effect. Natural amber of various shades was used, from bright yellow to honey-colored.

During World War II, the Amber Room was stolen and disappeared. After the war it could not be restored, and the original is considered lost. But in 2003, the “Restored Amber Room” was unveiled at the Pushkin Palace near St. Petersburg, based on historical photographs and documents. In restoring it, the restorers sought to recreate the appearance and atmosphere of the original room, taking into account the limitations and peculiarities of modern materials and technologies.

Alatyr

“Alatyr” is an ancient Russian and Slavic word that means “the healing stone.” In Slavic mythology, it is a sacred stone believed to possess healing properties and bring good luck. During the time of the Kievan Rus’, amber was referred to as Alatyr. It is often mentioned in ancient spells, fairy tales, and folk songs. According to one legend, Alatyr was created by the god Svarog and given to humans for protection against misfortune and illness.

The Slavs kept the stone in temples and regarded it as one of the most sacred objects. It was also seen as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom, representing the belief that they are necessary for achieving harmony and happiness in life.
